The University of Southampton Science Park has long been recognised as a hub for innovation and enterprise in the South. Since 2021, it has emerged as a leader in sustainability actions. By partnering with Absolar, the Science Park has successfully covered its entire campus with rooftop solar panels, turning every suitable building into a clean energy generator.
The journey began with a campus-wide scan using Absolar’s LiDAR and AI technology. Every building was assessed for engineering suitability — roof size, orientation, shading, and structural capacity — and then cross-referenced with economic factors such as lease lengths and tenancy agreements. This precise approach allowed the Science Park to prioritise the most viable and financially rewarding buildings for solar first, ensuring the greatest impact from the earliest stages.
Each solar project has proven to be a sound investment, reducing energy costs for the Park while also enabling the businesses based there to access sustainable energy at competitive rates. This combination of lower operating costs and greener credentials has strengthened the appeal of the Science Park for existing tenants and prospective new businesses alike.
Since the first installation in 2021, Absolar’s engineering team has delivered each project to the highest standards. Every system has been installed without disruption to daily business operations, with a smooth and efficient process that reflects Absolar’s commitment to quality and reliability.
After installation, Absolar worked with the Science Park to set up export tariffs for surplus energy, further enhancing the financial returns. Today, every building features its own dedicated display screen showing live energy generation data, giving tenants and visitors a clear view of the site’s commitment to renewable energy in action.
The Science Park’s solar programme stands as a model for how technology, strategy, and engineering excellence can combine to deliver measurable financial, environmental, and reputational benefits.
We at the Southampton Science Park have ambitious sustainability target, and Absolar’s work has supported our work towards this goal. Up to 2025, we have 9 buildings powered by solar systems provided by Absolar. And from the first project to the latest, their work has been professional, efficient, and great value for money. We would highly recommend their service to any business parks or commercial landlords.
