Absolar Celebrates Solar Appreciation Day with Southampton Science Park

March 31, 2025

A Milestone Moment for Local Clean Energy Leadership

Absolar was proud to mark Solar Appreciation Day this year in partnership with Southampton Science Park, celebrating a major milestone in the Park’s solar journey. With ten buildings now powered by solar across the campus, the site stands as a regional showcase for clean energy in action.

The Greek Letter Buildings are landmark of the Southampton Science Park. These buildings are now integrated with rooftop solar PV systems provided by Absolar - a series of projects between 2021 and 2024

Over the past two years, Absolar has worked closely with the Science Park team to assess, design, and implement solar solutions that align with the Park’s long-term sustainability strategy. The results speak for themselves:

  • 🔋 10 buildings now harnessing solar power
  • 2,546 solar panels installed across the site
  • 🔄 1,126 MWh of clean electricity generated
  • 🌍 233 tonnes of carbon saved to date

These figures represent more than just technical achievement - they highlight a strong commitment to climate leadership, energy independence, and environmental responsibility from one of the South’s leading innovation hubs.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Solar Appreciation Day with a partner like Southampton Science Park. Their vision and willingness to invest in clean energy not only reduces carbon emissions, but also sets a positive example for businesses and tech communities across the UK.”

Powering Innovation with Clean Energy

The transition to solar at the Park has been carefully planned to suit the energy needs of a diverse range of buildings, from high-tech offices to laboratory units. The integration of smart dashboards and performance tracking also ensures that tenants and visitors can see solar generation in real time, reinforcing the Park’s role as a leader in visible, tangible sustainability.

Caroline Nokes, MP launched the Smart Solar Monitor together with Dr Robin Chave, CEO of University of Southampton Science Park, and Nic Cory, Director at Absolar

For many businesses based at the Science Park, access to renewable energy is increasingly important, whether for achieving net zero targets, improving energy security, or enhancing environmental credentials. By embedding solar generation into its infrastructure, the Park is offering its occupiers both a cost-saving asset and a strong sustainability message.

Although we have been developing the idea for some time as part of our wider sustainability agenda, our first solar panel installation was surprisingly quick, taking just a couple of weeks, despite storm Eunice halting work on the roof for a couple of days! We anticipate extending solar power to other suitable premises, while companies across the Park are also expressing interest in their own installations. I’m excited to see where this momentum leads.”
--- Stuart Perry, Operations Director at the University of Southampton Science Park

As energy costs remain a pressing concern for organisations of all sizes, the Science Park’s proactive approach to energy generation offers a model for how solar can serve both environmental and financial goals — especially when paired with smart monitoring and performance analytics.

Absolar looks forward to continuing our partnership with Southampton Science Park and supporting even more businesses in realising the benefits of rooftop solar.
