Reflection from Recent Roof Renovation Works as part of a Solar Project

September 23, 2025

Is solar just about adding panels?

At first glance it might seem like that, but in reality every solar installation is a long-term investment that depends on much more than the panels themselves.

A solar PV system is designed to last for 30 years or more, and to get the full value from that investment the roof beneath it needs to have the same strength and longevity. If the roof is not properly prepared, the long-term performance and safety of the system can be compromised.

This was the starting point for our recent project with WA Cafe, a boutique Japanese patisserie that runs a central kitchen in Ealing. The two-storey building contains a large commercial kitchen with high energy use, making it a strong candidate for solar.

However, the roof showed several areas of erosion. When Absolar was invited to assess the site for solar potential, the first challenge was the condition of the roof, raising concerns about whether a solar PV system could be safely installed.

Before installation could begin, Absolar engineers carried out a programme of roof renovation. The work included cut-edge corrosion treatment, careful removal of old coating and rust, and the application of multiple layers of waterproof protection. These improvements extended the life of the roof and created a sound foundation for the solar system to be installed.

By taking this approach, the project ensures WA Cafe’s solar investment is protected for decades to come. It highlights the importance of viewing solar not just as a technology on its own but as part of a wider commitment to the long-term resilience of the building.

The project marks an important step for WA Cafe in reducing its energy costs and cutting its carbon footprint. By investing in solar, the business is making its production hub more resilient, while continuing to serve the community with its renowned Japanese-inspired pastries.
