FAQ

Reading is often called one of the UK's biggest tech hubs outside London. What does that mean for solar here?

It means a particularly high concentration of large, modern office campuses, at business parks such as Green Park and Thames Valley Park, home to major technology and telecoms employers. Campuses like these typically have lower daytime electricity intensity per square metre of roof than a factory or distribution shed, so accurate consumption data matters more here than almost anywhere else we assess, to make sure the system is sized against what you'll actually use rather than what the roof could theoretically hold.

Does Reading's concentration of data centres and tech campuses put pressure on the local grid?

It's a genuine factor, and one of the more significant ones in the area. Reading and the surrounding Thames Valley have seen substantial demand growth from data centres and large office campuses in recent years, which has affected capacity at a number of local substations. We submit the DNO application early in every project specifically to establish your position before you commit to a system size, rather than assuming capacity will be available.

Reading has a well-known history in biscuit manufacturing. Does any of that older industrial building stock remain, and is it suitable for solar?

Reading's Huntley & Palmers biscuit works was one of the largest factories of its kind in the world in its day, and while much of that specific site has been redeveloped, Reading retains a number of older industrial buildings from this and other manufacturing eras, generally repurposed for other commercial or light industrial use. Roof condition and structural capacity vary more on buildings like this than on a modern office campus, so the initial survey establishes the real position for your specific building.

Reading Festival brings huge crowds to the town every August. Does that affect solar installation scheduling nearby?

For sites close to the festival grounds or on routes affected by road closures and crowd management during the event weekend, yes, it's worth factoring into scheduling. We plan installation timing around your business's operations as standard, and for any site near the festival footprint we're happy to avoid that specific weekend rather than assume it won't matter.

Where else in Reading, beyond the big tech campuses, has strong commercial solar potential?

Reading's industrial estates and distribution space around the M4 and A33 corridor add further light industrial and warehouse roof stock, generally with a higher daytime consumption intensity relative to roof area than the large office campuses, and often a more straightforward economic case as a result.

Does Reading's town centre or riverside area create planning constraints for solar?

For listed buildings and the conservation areas around parts of the town centre and the River Thames and Kennet waterside, yes, planning consent is likely to be needed rather than solar falling under permitted development. Reading's business parks and industrial estates sit outside these areas and are generally unaffected.

How do I check my Reading building's solar potential?

Request a free remote solar survey. We will model your specific roof using LiDAR data and send a costed report within 2 working days, with no site visit or obligation needed to get started.

Help you cut through complexity

The process of a typical project

Commercial solar projects involve multiple parties, and their development can be a complex and lengthy procedure. We summarise the start-to-finish into 5 key steps to help you visualise the process. We have also published a detailed timeline diagram, which can be found here.

Absolar starts every project by presenting clients a remote solar survey report, which details the building's feasibility, estimated project cost, financial viability and payback period estimate. You can request a remote survey for your building here. It's free and totally zero-obligation. After that, Absolar engineers will visit your property for a site survey, collecting internal building information, proceeding to a Grid Application, which is required by UK National Grid for any solar PV project. As the grid application takes up to 3 months, Absolar engineers will work with you during this period to obtain other required paperwork such as planning permission and structural survey.

After the collection of all permissions, Absolar engineers will arrange with you a project commencing date. The entire project will not cause any disruption of your business operations, and the whole process is likely to take 2 - 5 weeks, depending on project size.
